What is a domain
name?
The simple answer is: it's the name or address that you type
into a web browser to view a website, such as our domain name - www.innereyedesign.com.
The more detailed answer is: it's the
name that points to a specific "IP address"
which, in turn, points to your website (on your
web host). When anyone in the world types in www.yourwebsite.com
they will be taken to your website.
Only one person can have a specific domain name, so for example, if
you were able to buy www.reallygreatwidgets.com, you would be the only
one that could use that name. In order to buy a domain name, you must
actually "register it" through a domain name registrar (a registrar is
a company that sells domain names - we are a registrar for

You can register any available domain name for one, two, three,
and sometimes even up to 10 years. While a domain name is registered to you,
no one else in the world can use it! If, however, your registration runs out
on a domain and you don't renew it in time, you can loose a domain name and it
can then be registered by someone else.
Although there are now many types of domain names, such as: .net, .org, .us,
.info, .biz, .ws, just to name a few - the most important and the most functional
has always been, and probably always will be, .com. It is the easiest to remember,
it is used globally, and it is even given more importance in the search engines.
So always try to get a ".com" name before anything else!
How can I see if a domain name is available?
It's pretty easy! You just have to use a domain name searching tool,
such as the one on our Domain Name Page,
type in the name that you're
interested in, and get the results. Unless the name you're looking for
is really original you'll probably have to search a few times to find a
".com" name that is acceptable to you.
If a specific domain name that you're looking for isn't available, but
there are available ones that resemble it, you will usually be notified
about it... but it always pays to get creative and come up with a few
names to search for, even if they're similar!
